The vital system without which survival of humans is impossible is the cardiovascular system. All cells in the human body require oxygen and nutrients for their functioning. Hence there is a requirement for the transport of the metabolites to the cells and that is where the cardiovascular system comes to play. The job of supplying oxygen and nutrients to the various body organs is done by the cardiovascular system so that the human body functions efficiently. The cardiovascular system is also generally known as the blood-vascular or circulatory system.

The heart is a muscular pumping device and is an organ with no bones.

Cardiovascular system

The cardiovascular system consists of blood vessels to carry the blood and an organ to pump the blood called the heart. The blood vessels also carry carbon dioxide and other wastes for disposal. The blood vessels run from top to bottom of the human body. In humans, it is a closed system, contrary to cockroaches which have an open type vascular system. Hence the circulatory fluid i.e., blood is confined within the blood vessels such as arteries, veins, and fine linking capillaries. The blood flow is not sluggish. Blood reaches the cell by the process of diffusion. Most mammals have a four-chambered heart and so the human also has a four-chambered heart.

Heart pumps over 1 million gallons of blood per year and 2000 gallons per day.

William Harvey, an English physician discovered the circulation of blood.

What does the cardiovascular system do?

The prime function of this system is to supply oxygen and other metabolites and also extract carbon-di-oxide and other waste products from the cells. It plays role in the clotting of open wounds, protects the body from diseases, and helps in healing. It also helps in maintaining the body’s normal temperature. The heart is located inside the rib cage in between the lungs. It is about the size of a fist. It is covered by the double-layered membrane called the pericardium. Pericardial fluid is filled within the visceral pericardium (inner layer) and parietal pericardium (outer layer) to reduce the friction of the heart while it is pumping. The heart pumps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood on different sides.

Why to take care of it?

Coming to cardiovascular health, it is more important than precious diamonds since life once lost is lost forever and also you may know the common saying health is the greatest wealth no matter what we have. Cardiovascular diseases are dangerous and it leads to fatality sometimes. Following good food habits, leading a healthy lifestyle, and the environment that you live in, decide your health condition.
